Born in Mexico City, tenor Diego Torre was a Domingo-Thornton Young Artist at Los Angeles Opera, where he made his company debut as Don José in performances of Carmen. In his debut season with Wolf Trap Opera Company, he sang Conte Ivrea in Verdi’s Un giorno di regno, Captain in Candide, and Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos.
Mr. Torre was engaged by The Metropolitan Opera during the 2009-2010 season to perform the Messenger in Aida and Federico in Stiffelio. This was followed by Masaniello in Daniel Auber’s La muette de Portici for Anhaltisches Theatre Dessau in Germany, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor for the Savonlinna Opera Festival in Finland, Foresto in Attila with San Francisco Opera and a return to Los Angeles Opera, covering Plácido Domingo in the title role of Il Postino. While performing in New York, famed impresario Lyndon Terracini offered Torre a 22-performance engagement of Puccini’s La Bohème at Opera Australia. Shortly after the tremendous success of that series, the artist accepted a position as Resident Tenor with the company.
The following seasons saw Torre singing over two dozen roles in Australia including Cavaradossi, Don José, Foresto, Faust, Eléazar, Radames, Turridu, Canio, Calaf, Pinkerton, Edgardo, Rodolfo, Riccardo, the Duke, Gabriele Adorno, Don Carlo and Ernani;he also appeared as soloist with the Queensland Symphony. The artist now holds passports from Australia and Mexico and is a Permanent Resident of the United States.
International engagements for Mr. Torre have included Dick Johnson (La fanciulla del West) at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, Canio (Pagliacci) with the Grand Théâtre de Genève, Calaf (Turandot) and Manrico (Il trovatore) at the Teatro Regio di Torino, Cavaradossi in China and Saarbrücken, Calaf in Oslo, Corrado (Il corsaro) in Parma and Cavaradossi, Canio and Turiddu (Cavalleria Rusticana) in Genoa.
During the 2023-2024 season, Torre returned to Opera Australia as Radames (Aida), Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly) and Cavaradossi (Tosca), sang Verdi’s Requiem and Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 for Sydney Philharmonia, and appeared as Canio (Pagliacci) with Lyric Opera of Kansas City. Diego’s closing performances of the season with Seattle Opera, as Canio in Pagliacci, were an outstanding critical success. The Seattle Times reported, “Torre’s performance as Canio was remarkable for its depth and nuance, as well as its heft and power throughout an imposing upper register. His showstopping aria, “Vesti la giubba,” is one of the all-time great moments for tenor, and Torre took full advantage of its expressive opportunities.”
The 2024-2025 season included a number of notable engagements including a reprise of Don José with Opera Australia and a return to the United States for Radames with Boston Lyric Opera and Calaf with Lyric Opera of Kansas City.
Diego will again sing on both continents during the 2025-2026 season in engagements including Don José in Carmen with Opera Australia and a concert presentation of Edgar with Minnesota Opera.
